Dust Devil Frequency of Occurrence and Radiative Effects at Jezero Crater, Mars, as Measured by MEDA Radiation and Dust Sensor (RDS)

چکیده
The Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer, onboard the Perseverance rover, is a meteorological station that operating on and includes, among other sensors, radiometer Radiation Dust Sensor (RDS). From RDS irradiance observations, total of 374 dust devils (DDs) were detected for first 365 sols mission (Ls = 6°–182°), which along with wind pressure measurements, we estimated DD frequency formation at Jezero between 1.3 3.4 km−2 sol−1 (increasing as move from spring into summer). This found to be smaller than Spirit or Pathfinder landing sites but much greater derived InSight site. maximum in occurs 12:00 13:00 local true solar time, when convective heat flux lower planetary boundary layer IR heating are both predicted peak crater. diameter, minimum height, trajectory studied showing (a) an average diameter 29 m (or median 25 m) 132 ± 63.4 5.6 5.5 m; (b) height 231 minimum-height 872 (c) migration direction agreement measurements. For all cases, DDs decreased UV irradiance, while visible near-IR wavelengths increases decreases observed. Contrary formation, these results indicate similar characteristics period.

Retrieving Dust Properties by Radiative Transfer Modelling of Dust Devils on Earth and Mars
To date, characterisation of dust devils by interpreting spectral measurements taken during a transit over a spectroscopic instrument has yet to be done and would provide valuable information of the physical size, dust load and internal structure of transiting dust devils. A Monte Carlo Radiative Transfer model (MCRT) was developed to investigate the spectral variations during a dust devil tran...
متن کاملMars: Dust Devil Tracks in Hellas Basin and Argyre Planitia
Introduction: Dust devils on Mars could be an important mechanism for delivery of dust into the Martian atmosphere. Suspended dust in the Martian atmosphere is observed to be ~1-2μm in diameter [1,2,3] and calculations of fall-out rate [4,5] imply an ongoing supply of this fine dust to the atmosphere. Laboratory wind tunnel experiments [6,7], however, suggest that entrainment of fine dust into ...
متن کاملStratigraphy and Evolution of Delta Channel Deposits, Jezero Crater, Mars
Introduction: The Jezero impact crater hosted an open-basin lake [1] that was active during the valley network forming era on early Mars [2]. This basin contains a well exposed delta deposit at the mouth of the western inlet valley (Fig. 1) [1,3-5]. The fluvial stratigraphy of this deposit provides a record of the channels that built the delta over time. Here we describe observations of the str...
متن کاملDust devils as observed by Mars Pathfinder
[1] Dust devils are localized meteorological phenomena frequently observed in terrestrial dry lands and desert landscapes as well as on Mars. They are low-pressure, warm core vortices that form at the bottom of convective plumes and loft dust from the surface. They move with the speed of the ambient wind and are tilted by wind shears. The Mars Pathfinder detected dust devils as dust plumes in t...
متن کاملQuantifying global dust devil occurrence from meteorological analyses
Dust devils and nonrotating dusty plumes are effective uplift mechanisms for fine particles, but their contribution to the global dust budget is uncertain. By applying known bulk thermodynamic criteria to European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) operational analyses, we provide the first global hourly climatology of potential dust devil and dusty plume (PDDP) occurrence. In ag...
